Discipline Beats Motivation

Whether starting a new project, joining a fitness program, or diving into a new ministry, that initial burst of motivation can feel incredible---So much progress. Yet, we have seen what happens when that motivation fades. Many find themselves stuck, unable to sustain the energy needed to reach the end goal. This is where discipline beats motivation. Discipline is the steady, dependable approach that can lead us to lasting growth and fulfillment not only online in life but in the things of God as well.

Pay attention to the image. The top shows a dramatic leap at the beginning, followed by smaller jumps and eventually flatlining—a thrilling start that loses steam. The bottom starts with a modest leap, followed by several consistent, significant steps until it reaches the destination. This makes me think about that popular Disney Animation from 1934 called "The Tortoise and the Hare" and how the slow and steady Wins The Race.

Walter Brueggemann, an influential theologian, highlights that faith isn’t just an emotional high; it’s about commitment and obedience. He notes, “Faith is a way of being in the world that implies a life of obedience and commitment.” This commitment isn’t just about those fleeting moments of motivation, like after a church camp or a miracle; it’s about showing up every day and practicing our faith in real and meaningful ways.

In fact, the Bible is full of stories that reflect the importance of discipline. In Hebrews 12:1-2, we’re encouraged to run with perseverance the race marked out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus. This imagery is powerful; it’s not about sprinting through life but about enduring the journey. Discipline helps us stay grounded and focused, even when life gets tough.

Think about the Apostle Paul. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, he talks about running a race to win, emphasizing the need for training and discipline. He recognized that real growth—both personally and in our communities—comes from consistent effort over time.

Three Benefits of Discipline

1. Sustainable Growth: When we approach our faith with discipline, we create a rhythm that helps us grow steadily. It allows us to weave our beliefs into our daily lives, creating a lifestyle that truly reflects our faith.

2. Resilience in Tough Times: Life will always throw challenges our way. A disciplined approach helps us stand firm during those trials. James 1:2-4 reminds us that challenges can produce perseverance, which leads to maturity and completeness.

3. Stronger Connections: When we engage in disciplined practices like prayer, worship, and service, we build a stronger community. Supporting each other with discipline creates an environment where we can truly thrive.

I believe God invites us to take our time and be disciplined in our faith practice, knowing that faith is a journey rather than a sprint. Let’s commit to being disciplined in our approach, trusting that each small step we take brings us closer to where we’re meant to be.
